In this guide I’ll show you five hidden gardens across the UK that you can discover on a single weekend. Each spot offers a unique blend of history, design, and local charm that you won’t see in the usual tourist brochures.
1. The Secret Rose Garden – Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Located just a 10‑minute walk from Marlow’s main station, this 0.5‑acre plot is owned by the Marlow Historical Society. The garden opened to the public on 12 March 2021, and since then it has hosted 18 guided tours per season. The highlight is a 300‑year‑old rose bush that blooms from late April to early June. The society offers a free 20‑minute audio guide if you bring your phone, which explains the origins of each rose variety. If you’re a plant enthusiast, note that the garden is closed on the first Sunday of every month for maintenance.
2. The Hidden Orchard – Llandudno, Conwy
About 2.5 miles south of Llandudno’s promenade, the orchard sits behind a derelict windmill. It was restored in 2018 by a group of volunteers and now contains 45 apple, pear, and plum trees. The orchard opens at 9 a.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. on Sundays. A 15‑minute walk around the perimeter takes you past a stone well that dates back to 1890. The orchard’s most popular activity is the “pick‑your‑own” fruit event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the harvest season (late September to early October).

3. The Garden of Stills – Perth, Perthshire
Perth’s hidden gem is a 1‑acre garden that sits on the edge of the River Tay. It was designed by local landscape architect Fiona MacLeod in 2003 and is known for its “water‑mirrored” beds. The garden opens from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Christmas Eve. A 30‑minute guided walk explains the botanical choices and the engineering behind the reflective pools. The only drawback? The garden is on a steep slope, so the path can be slippery in wet weather.
4. The Secret Tea Garden – St Ives, Cornwall
Hidden behind a row of cottages on St Ives’ High Street, this tea garden opened its doors in 2015. It features a 0.3‑acre plot of lavender, rosemary, and chamomile. The garden is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. The owners run a free 10‑minute tea‑making demo every Friday at 3 p.m. The garden’s quiet setting makes it ideal for a mid‑week break, but be aware that the garden is closed during the first week of every month for pruning.
5. The Urban Oasis – Glasgow, Glasgow
In the heart of Glasgow’s West End, a 0.8‑acre garden sits behind a former textile factory. The space was converted in 2019 and now hosts 12 flower beds, a small pond, and a pergola covered in wisteria. The garden opens from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. A 20‑minute self‑guided tour is available via QR code on the entrance gate. The only limitation is that the garden is closed on Saturdays between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. for staff training.
