A hidden gem is a place that keeps its charm tucked away from the usual tourist trail. In a coastal setting that means a town with a single, unspoiled beach, a handful of family‑run cafés, and a local market that sells seaweed crisps and handmade shells. It’s the kind of place where you can walk from the pier to the lighthouse without seeing a chain‑link fence.
Finding the Right Spot
Start with the size. A town of fewer than 5,000 residents usually has the intimacy you’re after. Look for a population density of under 300 people per square kilometre; that’s a good indicator that the streets aren’t packed with tourists. Check the local council website for the latest census data—most councils publish it free of charge.
Next, check the transport links. A hidden gem is often reachable by a single bus line or a short train ride. For example, the town of Llandudno Junction is only 12 minutes from the main line, yet its own station remains a quiet, unadvertised stop.
What to Expect on Arrival
Upon arrival, you’ll notice the absence of large hotels. Instead, you’ll find bed‑and‑breakfasts that have been family‑owned for generations. The average price for a night is around £45, which is 30% cheaper than the nearby resort towns. The local café menu typically features a signature dish—sea‑salted clotted cream scones—priced at £4.50.
Take a stroll along the promenade. In most hidden gems, the promenade is a narrow path that follows the shoreline, lined with old fishing boats. The water is usually clearer than the commercial beaches, with visibility of 20 metres on a sunny day.
Activities That Feel Like Home
- Fishing charters – Small boats leave at 9 am and return by 2 pm. The catch is fresh and sold at the local fish market for £12 a kilogram.
- Sea‑weed picking – The local market sells dried sea‑weed for £3 per kilogram, and the town hosts a monthly “Sea‑weed Festival” in September.
- Historic walks – A 3‑kilometre trail leads from the lighthouse to the old mill, with interpretive signs costing £2 per family.

When the Sun Sets
Evenings are the best time to experience the town’s soul. The pier lights flicker on at 6 pm, and the local band plays folk tunes until midnight. A single bar on the waterfront serves a local craft beer for £5, and the bartender will often share stories about the town’s history.
Practical Tips for Your Stay
Book accommodation at least three months in advance if you’re traveling in July, as the town’s small hotels fill up quickly. Bring a reusable water bottle; the town’s tap water is rated “excellent” by the Environmental Agency. Finally, carry a rain jacket—coastal weather can shift from sunny to stormy in less than an hour.
Why This Town Stands Out
The combination of low visitor numbers, affordable lodging, and authentic local culture makes this coastal town a true hidden gem. It offers the serenity of a beach vacation without the crowds, and the local community’s warmth turns a simple stay into a memorable experience.
